Bad News for Bail Agent AgentsHelp us defeat H.R. 2964 as it currently stands! There is a bill pending in the United States Congress that —in spite of possibly good intentions— would have disastrous consequences for those of us involved in the profession of ensuring that defendants appear in court. This bill as it stands could eliminate commercial bail! If you have questions about this pending legislation please contact your surety company or Mark A. Heffernan for additional information. We need every licensed bail agent to e-mail and fax letters supporting our position to each of the United States Congressmen and women on the Judiciary Committee below. Numbers count! Please let them know where we stand today, or look for another line of work tomorrow. Please contact each Congress member no later than 5PM, Wednesday March 29. FAX OR E-MAIL EACH OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, ESPECIALLY MEMBERS OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON THE CONSTITUTION. Here is a SAMPLE LETTER (Microsoft Word format) that you can copy to your own stationary and fax today.
COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY 2138 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 (202) 225-3951 MR. HYDE (ILLINOIS), CHAIRMAN
Sample Letter:Hello. I am a professional bail agent, licensed and regulated by my state. I have been in the bail bond business for many years. I am a small businessman and work hard at what I do. Last year, we successfully supervised individuals on bail, returning them to stand trail. This significantly relieved crowding in our jail facilities and reduced demand for new cells. I work closely and effectively with the criminal justice system in my community to keep our streets safe. My services are at no cost to the taxpayers. I am concerned about H.R. 2964, introduced by Congressman Hutchinson. This bill, if enacted would deal a death blow to the professional bail community. Hearings are scheduled before your Subcommittee on March 30th. Please be there to listen to our arguments against the bill as drafted. It is important for you to know that a bill very similar to this, introduced by Congressman Hutchinson in the last Congress, was defeated in markup by the full Judiciary Committee. It is also important for you to know that our professional association, PBUS, the professional Bail Agents of the United States, has worked tirelessly over the past two years trying to achieve a compromise with Congressman Hutchinson on this issue. Unfortunately, these efforts have been unsuccessful. We have been left with no choice but to oppose the bill. Thank you for your time and interest in this matter. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. We look forward to seeing you on March 30th. Sincerely,
I have been in business for ____ years. I employ ______ in my business. I have successfully supervised _________ individuals on bail. WE MUST STOP THIS BILL. |
